As is often the case when Apple unveils a new product, critics and customers are divided into two camps. With the freshly unveiled 4GB iPod Mini, the groups are:

1) It's too expensive at $249
and
2) It's perfect

Money, Money, Money
I'll start with the "too expensive" argument. This statement is based on the fact that, for $50 additional dollars (20% more money), you can buy an entry-level 3rd generation iPod that holds approx. 10,000 songs (or 15 GB, your choice). If that is your sole evaluating factor, space per dollar, than you are correct. The Mini is too expensive for you. While I'd love for the price to be $50 less, there is no doubt that the price will go down with time.

Love at First Sight
The other half has different needs. These are the consumers who are drawn to the new family of iPod because of brand-recognition, form factor, and (I'll bite) the cute-factor. Not everyone needs 15, 30, or 40 GB of on-the-go music. The iPod Mini is clearly marketed and designed for those people. It is a fashion accessory that also happens to play music. It easily slips into your pocket or straps to your arm for running through the park. At an estimated 1,000 songs, the casual music snob will not outgrow the Mini.

This move is a win-win situation for Apple. The fashionistas get to join the revolution, and the industrial listeners have a great price-point on the 15GB iPod. Time will tell if everyone else catches on to the vision.
